Today is the start of something very special for Wing Creek Resort – we are participating in the Kaslo Art Walk for the first time! It was an easy decision to sign up as a venue for Art Walk since the vibrant arts community here was a huge draw for us when we originally arrived in this area. Inspired by the breathtaking beauty and immensity of the Nature that surrounds us, we are happy to support and promote local artists who give this area much of its character.
We are honoured to be the first venue in Art Walk to extend the event into more of an Art Drive (5 minutes north of Kaslo!) We have transformed our Retreat Centre into an Art Gallery for the duration of Art Walk 2013 so please come by to view the beautiful original watercolour paintings and art cards of talented local watercolour artist Kate O’Keefe.
Wing Creek is delighted to be the venue featuring the works of Kate O’Keefe who lives and works in the relative seclusion of Johnson’s Landing (1 hour northeast of Wing Creek on the eastern shore of beautiful Kootenay Lake). Kate is inspired by Nature and her work shows her deep appreciation for her surroundings as well as her immense talent.
Footnote: By 7pm on Opening Night we had already sold 2 of Kate's beautiful works -- a great start to our participation in Art Walk!
I have been surrounded by wild places all my life: from explorations as a child growing up in a semi-rural area near Vancouver, exploring the backwoods of BC as a younger adult, to immersing myself in the majesty of the West Kootenays. From a start in oils, I turned to watercolour as a more convenient medium for outdoor painting during my summer travels around BC – to the mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, and trails which make up so much of our province. Mostly I’m self taught, attending workshops and courses to learn a little bit more about technique, line, and colour from each. But it is Nature herself, and experience, which is the big teacher.
Watercolour is both an expressive and unforgiving medium. My works move between interpretive realism and emotive abstract. The scenes I paint, from garden flowers to mountain scenes, say something to me, and I hope they do to you too. Please enjoy my watercolours.
When I’m not painting I tend things: our large organic gardens, a chicken flock, a dog, Nature, and volunteering for various causes. Last year’s devastating landslide in Johnson’s Landing stole my muse; after a 10-month hiatus I’m enjoying the world of painting again.
Wing Creek Resort is happy to welcome Kate back to her world of painting! Our world is that much richer for her return.
